Two years ago, the idea for this blog series came into my heart and mind, but for the longest time I haven't been able to put words to it. Honestly I didn't know where to start then and if I'm being honest, I don't know where to start now. So I believe, if we are to know who the "Children of Light" are we must start by understanding who or what exactly is "the Light."

Through the scriptures of the Holy Bible let's learn together what it means to be Children of Light! I am going to be looking at passages from the Bible using a mixture of two methods. The first method is through literary analysis which - simply put - is to break down a text into parts to understand how the parts support meaning we pull from the text. The second method will be the Scripture Observation Application Prayer, or SOAP which is a widely used method Christians use to study the Bible. The Bible version I will use for this series will be the Amplified Bible. For easier reading, I will remove parenthesis and bracketed text which provide extra meaning for words and clarification or comments not always directly translated from the original language. However, I highly encourage if you're interested in understanding meaning in more depth or detail, you can go to Bible.com or Biblehub.com and choose the Amplified version to read.

The first passage I'd like to begin with puts us at the beginning of an introduction you'll find in a book in the New Testament called John. Let's read John, chapter one, verses one through five together:

'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him not even one thing was made that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness did not understand it or overpower it or appropriate it or absorb it.' - John 1:1-5 AMP

From this passage we are introduced to "the Light." From my observations, "the Light" is synonymous with other titles and roles which are: "the Word," "The Light of men," and "God."

From these observations I infer that the Light was a guide to "men," or mankind, maybe a form of instruction or message, and it was God with a big "G."

The attributes of the Light are life, strength, and the ability to pierce through the darkness.

The Light could not be understood by the darkness, nor could it be absorbed or appropriated. It's interesting to note that many of these sentences are in past tense, which I can infer, some event may have taken place that allowed the Light to demonstrated these attributes.

With these observations from this passage alone, I would conclude that "the Light" is God and the attributes of God are the same as the attributes of the Light.

As this series is about the Children of Light, I will conclude with a few points of thought:

  1. As children resemble their parents - whether it be in physical traits or behavioral traits - the Children of Light should resemble the Light, who is God.

  2. I find it fascinating that the Light could not be understood, overpowered, appropriated, or absorbed by the darkness. Perhaps this could be the inheritance of the Children of the Light.

  3. All things were created and came into existence through the Light, which from our observation of the text I have identified as God. Therefore God created all things.

  4. Knowing scientifically, darkness is the absence of light, and it can be caused due to the obstruction or waning power of its source, who or what is "the darkness" and where did it come from?

I'm hoping to find answers to questions and share them in the next part of the series!

That's it for this post! Now, a prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for helping me write this post.

I pray this series will allow myself and readers to learn more about you and what it means to be Children of the pure & perfect Light. Thank you for insight and thank you for wisdom. Bless each and every reader, in Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
